Frame relay switching

Posted on April 10, 2010

In my back to the basis … The frame relay switching … Not much used nowadays but still in the CCIE!

Frame relay switching is very straightforward, first you need to enable frame relay switching globally

FR_SWITCH(config)#frame-relay switching

After we need to setup the interfaces to the our routers

interface Serial1/0
 no ip address
 encapsulation frame-relay
 serial restart-delay 0
 clock rate 64000
 frame-relay intf-type dce

We now have our basic setup but nothing will happen as we don’t have any mappings! Lets configure the mappings

 frame-relay route 102 interface Serial1/1 201

This means that all traffic coming on DLCI 102 will be switched to interface Serial1/1 on DLCI 201.

So the final configuration

frame-relay switching
!
interface Serial1/0
 no ip address
 encapsulation frame-relay
 serial restart-delay 0
 clock rate 64000
 frame-relay intf-type dce
 frame-relay route 102 interface Serial1/1 201
!
interface Serial1/1
 no ip address
 encapsulation frame-relay
 serial restart-delay 0
 clock rate 64000
 frame-relay intf-type dce
 frame-relay route 201 interface Serial1/0 102
!

We can check this by issuing the show frame-relay route

FR_SWITCH#show frame-relay route
Input Intf Input Dlci Output Intf Output Dlci Status
Serial1/0 102 Serial1/1 201 active
Serial1/1 201 Serial1/0 102 active
